Illicit: A Novel (A Lancaster Series Standalone Novel) Kindle Edition
For USA Today bestselling author Ava Harrison comes a forbidden, student-teacher romance.
I was never supposed to see him again.
One night of passion with a complete stranger.
My last tryst before senior year.
But I was lost the moment his tempting lips were on my skin. His intense touch on my body.
It should have ended there.
But he’s not a stranger. He’s my history teacher. And wanting him is against the rules.
Off limits. Forbidden. Illicit.

Ava Harrison is fast becoming one of my favourite authors this year. Her latest book Illicit is an all-consuming, angsty, yet forbidden love story that will keep any romantics taste buds wanting more.
The prologue is what captured me to wanting to consume more about this story. The two main characters Lynn and Carson portray a modern day Romeo and Juliet storyline, however there are so many layers to this book that keeps you hooked on what will happen next. I really loved how the characters are not just about conquering each other in bed but about knowing one's self worth and strength.
The story flows effortlessly and every layer wants you wanting to delve more and more into these characters persona's and lives. This is definitely a must read for any readers who love stories of heartache and strength.

I received this arc from the author in exchange for an honest review
Unfortunately, I'm only rating Illicit by Ava Harrison 3 stars. I really had to ponder on my feelings when it came to the story and characters overall, and the realism of events. Yes, I know this is fiction, but i feel like it lacked substance and story/character development that gives the reader the emotional connection and is able to draw them in and feel like they are part of the story.
Although this was a teacher/student romance. I feel like this theme was loosely based due to Lynn's age and the lacking of that "forbidden fruit and naughtiness" vibe which I have come to expect in this sub-genre.
I found Lynn's character to be immature and extremely negative. I just wish she'd been portrayed as more mature and stronger, but she just irritated the hell out me instead!
Carson didn't do it for me and I'm putting this down to him lacking true alpha-nism, and his inconsistent way of thinking throughout? He was kinda nerdy in the beginning, then all alpha, which he just didn't pull off successfully in my eyes.
Her mother was almost a breeze-in, breeze-out sort of character, not becoming a pivotal role until much later near the end and her harsh treatment towards Lynn and her bestfriend wasnt justified within the story and if so, I didn't find it believable? I feel like she was misunderstood, but bc her background lacked, I'm not sure if the author wanted her portrayed this way?
Overall this book needed more! More story, more character development and more SEX! Sex is a major player when i choose my reads and this unfortunately, was mediocre to lacking in that area.
On a positive note. It did highlight some real life issues and ways people can seek help.
It ended with and expected HEA and I absolutely love the cover, smoking hot!
If your looking for that forbidden student/teacher romance with all the bells and whistles, I recommend trying elsewhere.
I will be checking out other books by this author and giving her a chance to win me over. Sorry Ava

“I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book!” Illicit is the taboo story of a teacher student relationship. The turmoils Lynn goes through with a dysfunctional mother . The story is amazingly written and the story line is fantastic. I would recommend this book gladly to anyone. Ava Harrison has an amazing way of writing, love her work.

This had me enthralled in the beginning but as the story unfolded I found myself skipping little bits. I think that when a character is thinking so much it disallows the reader to come up with there own interpretation and book world/story world. I found that too much discription can sometimes takeaway from the readers enjoyment/perspective of the book. I hope that makes sense.. I really did enjoy the book at times and the whole storyline was great.. Three and a half stars xo

Perfect student teacher romance..

Student teacher romance is one of my favorite genres. But it's this type of books, that make me go crazy over them. Yes it was a student teacher relationship book and for the majority it is but then it was so much more. About two beautiful but lonely souls finding comfort in each other's togetherness. I loved every word WRITTEN. Lynn and Carson meet at a beach party. Before they even know anything about each other they get together thinking that probably they would never see each other again. but fate has other plan , when Lynn finds out that her new history teacher is none other than the guy she had an amazing beach night with. The way story I taken further, I was hanging to each word. Especially the angsty part, WOW. And OMG, Carson is the ultimate brooding, intense and a teacher at that. who wouldn't want to bend over at his desk. 😉.. The ending especially was what I loved more than anything. Perfect student teacher romance.. Loved this one 😍

A well balanced book

This is the first book that I have read by this Author.
I was not sure what to expect as so many of today's novels seem to be based on gratuitous sex scenes , probably for the writers need to fill up space in the novel.
I can say that this book is definitely not in that category.
The main characters both have their own demons to wrangle with throughout the story .
As the story progresses , you get a real feeling of the andst and the heartbreak , I was wondering if there was going to be a let up or break in how much was piled onto a character, but I have to say that this does refect " everyday life" ( after a fashion) and at some point we have all had life pile one upset onto another .
I love the fact that this story is written from both main characters view points , although I would have liked to have seen just a little bit more of the male POV.
The story had me in tears at some points, but not for the main characters. The support characters bring in a "knock on effect " of some of the issues addressed in this novel.
I feel that if Miss Harrison is clever enough , she could easily get another couple of novels from this . I believe that it is merited and I would enjoy seeing how some of the characters progress.

Better than most in the sub-genre

The forbidden romance between a student and teacher is one of my least favorite romance sub-genres. But the reviews suggested this new-to-me-author's formula was different and included far deeper personal matters than just the usual underage taboo sex-filled hookups. I took a chance and I’m glad I did – even though it will never be a favorite.
Carson Blake and Lynn Adams are both flawed and broken individuals. They both have abandonment issues and other problems that plague their daily lives.
"I've stopped wishing for extraordinary.
I've stopped wishing for that one moment so profound it will change everything.
I know it will never happen, so there's no point in dreaming.
But like all things in life, extraordinary happens
when you least expect it, and in the blink of an eye, everything can change."
Lynn, feeling rejected and unloved by her boyfriend, seeks solace on the beach away from a last hurrah of summer party. There she meets a gorgeous stranger. There's a magnetic attraction between them immediately. They share a little star gazing that ends in a night of passion. Early the next morning, while Blake sleeps, Lynn sees their hookup for what it is, and sneaks out putting it behind her. But come Monday morning, when the sound of the school bell rings welcoming students back for the start of Lynn's senior year, SURPRISE-SURPRISE -- the beach hookup is her first hour history teacher - Mr. Blake.
From there begins a complex and heart-wrenching entanglement that puts everything on the line. I was relieved early on when it was revealed to my satisfaction that both student and teacher were of age. No legal boundaries overstepped. But school rules and regs, moral values and reputations are not so easily thrown aside. And there’s also a new career and college applications on the chopping block as well. Both student and teacher are aware of the rules they are breaking, but as hard as they try to heed them, powerful feelings of attachment might just win out. For Carlson, he puts up walls and tries to divert himself from being alone with Lynn. But sometimes ignoring the situation is far too great -- especially when each day begins facing your greatest temptation eye-to-eye.
"Instead, I build walls. Walls I have no intention of letting her breach. Now to keep them up."
Lynn is younger and a bit of a tease, too. She often confronts her teacher with enticements that are simply too much to resist. When she overhears a female teacher with a speculative eye on Carson, inviting him to join her for a drink, jealousy raises its ugly head, and the situation becomes even riskier. Lynn doesn't handle the event well and chaos ensues -- perhaps this, too, can be attributed to her immaturity.
"Carson Blake is affected by me as I am of him. This isn't an illusion. I didn't imagine this.
We both feel it, we both want this. It should scare me, but it doesn't. Instead, I can finally breathe."
Lynn's life is filled with family drama and devastating secrets, and at one point causes Lynn to be self-destructive. Her mother and father are divorced. Mom is completely unavailable and unbelievably disgusting and selfish. Dad keeps his distance, too. His reasoning has some basis that you'll find out when the time is right. Carson is fresh out of college and starting his first teaching job. He's had his own version of harsh reality growing up, too. He's dedicated, smart and witty -- but a dark shadow of anger and bitterness stemming from his past has left him with anger management issues.
My attention was captured from the beginning by well-developed characterization, along with how well the story moved forward. The profound range of emotions dealt with is mindboggling. Dealing with a multitude of topics surrounding family issues, friendship, healing mind and spirit, coming of age, finding your purpose and making your dreams come true are all confronted. There was never any doubt in my mind that these two shared a deep commitment and an intense desire for each other.
The book started off on a great run, then became a little slow, and finally ended on a rushed effect. I had issues with a few incidents, as well as a couple of unresolved questions that should have been answered, but my interest never wavered. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, heartache and all! Because of the nature of the beast, adding a glimpse of Carson and Lynn five years or so down the road might give their story a more solid ending. On the whole, it's a well-written story, and one I think fans of drama and angst filled teacher/student romances would find a step above most.

Illicit is my first Ava Harrison read and I liked it.
Lynn and Carson have met before, before they find out that their relationship is about to become illicit.
You see Carson now happens to be one of Lynn's teachers. Lynn and Carson have this deep connection that goes beyond student/teacher, but can they keep it that way now they've found out the truth - no because the connection draws them into temptation and neither can seem to give up no matter how they know it's the right thing to do.
While I did like story some bits of the it just didn't seem necessary for me and took away too much focus on the main characters, but apart from that I will be reading more from this author.
