Balance Check

Rate this book
Life has a funny way of throwing you off balance.

Take me for example. I spent years in a bad marriage with a self-serving ass, only to have the love of my life show up when I least expected him. Greg helped me on my journey of self discovery and taught me that, no, I’m not perfect. But I’m perfectly me. It was an amazing journey.

We laughed hard. We loved even harder.

And then he was suddenly and cruelly ripped away from me by the unclenching jaws of fate.

Ok, so it wasn’t that dramatic. And I really need to stop watching the Investigation Channel.

But now Greg is back and as it turns out, re-incorporating someone into your life isn’t that easy. Between jobs, kids, and barely-there friendships, life and love can be messy. Making it all work is a balancing act.

But we’re determined to get it in check.

After the way the first book finished I just had to read this one to find out how Elena and Gregs story ended.

This one starts 9 months after the first one ends. How is Elena managing life after what happened? What about Greg?

I can't go into detail without giving away plot twists from the first book, I can say I got the answers and conclusion I wanted. This was a quick read unlike the first but for me lacked the page turning quality of the first.

I did really enjoy the characters and being back in their world, I just thought something was missing from this one that had been in the first. It didn't help that there was no sex at all in this one, yes you heard none at all.

This is a must read if you have read Getting a grip and you're anything like me and just have to know how things end. This 'nice' story was all wrapped up with a "nice' bow.

‘A balance check is a way of taking a pause in the middle of your routine so you can readjust so you don’t fall.’

So, at the end of Getting A Grip I was left feeling a bit sad and confused. I loved everything about the story but just needed a bit more. Needless to say I was thrilled to know that the author felt the same way and gave us Balance Check to finish off Greg & Elena’s story. This is about half of the length of the first book so more like an novella to read but it gave me everything I was looking for.

It has been nine months since Greg left town and life has just been ticking along for Elena. She is now working and despite Callie’s efforts to get her dating again, she is still not quite ready to take that step, she is still in love with Greg. Little does she know that his circumstances have been flipped again and he has just moved back to her town.

Greg’s life has once again been dictated by his ex-wife’s whims. He loves being a father to their daughter Peyton but the way Libby uses her to manipulate him is just cruel. Greg always puts Peyton’s needs first but Libby hasn’t seemed to have grasped that maternal concept, it’s always me, me me with that woman.

Greg is hoping that his return to town means he can reconnect with Elena and finally be with the woman he loves. He has missed her and her girls in his life. However, there are some explanations and the past nine months to catch up before there will be any steps forward for this couple.

Blended families are not always easy to grapple at the best of times and when there is a nasty ex-wife who likes to cause trouble for no reason at all it just adds even more stress to what Greg and Elena are trying to build together. However, everyone has a breaking point and Greg has reached his, he is tired of being played like a puppet and he plans to take charge of his little girl’s happiness once and for all.

This was a really quick read for me but gave me everything I was wanting at the end of the first book.

‘Don’t be afraid of falling, Elena. I’ll always be here to catch you.’ - Greg

Love me some ME Carter. Her books just flow, you start reading at lunch and the next thing you know its bedtime and the book is finished. Her characters are real, you feel like they are you or at least someone you know.

Elena and Greg stayed in touch after his move to TX but it got to hard and so they cut it off. Now Greg is back and Elena has mixed feelings. Sure they still love each other but what if he leaves again. While her body issues are mostly gone her fears and insecurities of never being enough are heightened with his leaving and a new friend of Callie's.

Can Greg prove to her he is in this for the long haul? While she trust him enough to give him the chance? I loved this series.

Can't wait to read my next book by this author.

The journey of loving yourself[for Elena] and standing up for your rights[for Greg]was neatly wrapped in this book. Here are some great parenting tips supplied by the characters of this awesome book.

- if you fall down, just rub some dirt on it and you'll be as good as new.

- always have Popsicles ready in the freezer in case of emotional breakdown emergency.

- allow the kids to spray off each other using the water hose in case they get dirty after devouring the Popsicles.

- always use Ziploc bags instead of fold-over baggies to store food.

- Come up with a cute and catchy name for the kid's lunch when you're serving leftovers that was about to rot in the fridge.

Balance Check is an easy to read story that highlights the heart and humor (and maybe a bit of a moral) that can be found in the everyday.

I smile at her, knowing this is more than just gymnastics tips. This is a life lesson she’s going to need someday. “If something’s wrong, you fix it before you keep going. If you don’t, your routine is either going to be really messy, or eventually you’ll fall.” Just like in life."

Balance Check was a nice quick read.

It was an enjoyable experience and I was really happy to meet again these bunch of characters so soon.
My heart broke for Elena and Greg at the end of the first book but this second installment healed all my wounds, giving me a really enterteining epilogue.

I really hope to read more about this series because there are still some interesting characters to be told.

Favorite Quotes:

Then he turns and swaggers out the door. Literally swaggers. Puts his hands in his pockets to make sure the seat of his pants pulls tight as I watch him walk away. Damn that kid. He just used his best asset to make sure I didn’t say no. He’s good. He’s real good.

Have you ever seen a forty-one-year old woman hit the deck? It’s worse than if I tried to drop it like it’s hot. And the last time I did that, my pants ripped straight down the middle... It sounded like an explosion in the back of my pants.

He puts the present up to his ear and shakes it, grimacing when it rattles… “They’re the tiny Legos with instructions in Spanish that I’m going to have to try and interpret while I make the damn things myself, aren’t they? … You’re a family full of evil people, you know that?”

My Review:

Balance Check picked up nine months after the end of Getting A Grip with a narrative that quickly brought us up to speed and then launched Elena into a comical dilemma. I enjoyed this humorous yet observant installment as much as I had the first book in the series, and although book two was considerably shorter, both were equally eventful, amusing, and satisfying reads. I adored these strong, playful, and sassy characters and look forward to reading many more engaging tales from this talented scribe.

Yay! Elena and Greg's story continues!
This book is a MUST read after book #1, Getting A Grip!

Balance Check pics up where the first book left off. I can't tell you how happy I was that M.E. Carter released this book. After I finished reading book #1, I was so distraught with how it ended.

Elena and Greg's stories are real, relatable and relevant! I connected with this book on so many levels.

Elena is a strong person, mother and friend. I love that she has this ability to stay strong when life throws you curve balls. It's when she catches them that she sees that life can be so much more than what she was dealt with. Life continues to make her more confident. We could all learn something from Elena.

Greg....oh Greg. I adore him. I love the way he loves his daughter and most importantly, the way he loves Elena. Greg portrays that there are still "good" guys out there, if not GREAT ones! He is encouraging and uplifting and perfect for Elena. He loves her daughters like his own.

This story is full of laughs, triumphs and has a wonderful happy ending. The storyline is so relatable. If you yourself has not went through something like this story in your life, I can guarantee you know someone that has! It gives hope that there is a chance at love for a second time when you didn't imagine that there could be. We all need to Balance Check our lives sometimes.

You should pick this book series up and read them like yesterday! M.E. Carter has done it again! Rom-Com greatness!

The continuation of Elena and Greg's story is finally here. I've been waiting to find out what happens next in their love story because that ending in Getting A Grip left me wanting more. I had so many questions and thankfully they were all answered in Balance Check .

Let's start from the beginning. I love the fact that Elena did not fall apart or pine away for Greg, she has three little girls she has to take care of. So, she did what any single mother would do, get a job. I love the empowerment of Elena, she doesn't *need* a man, and although she is missing Greg, she has to live her life to the fullest.

I don't think I've mentioned how I love Greg and his decision to leave in order to be with Peyton. It was the mature thing to do. It was of course the hardest and most heartbreaking choice he had to make, but nonetheless it was the RIGHT one. I'll always applaud Greg for choosing his child, no matter how much it hurt. Now, can we talk about the fact that when returned to town I was over the moon? I want nothing more than for Greg and Elena to get back on the journey of falling for each other.

Side-note: How freaking AWESOME is Joie? I CANNOT for her book to come out!

Winning Elena is no easy task and she is not a foregone conclusion, there will always be his crazy ex-wife looming over them and their relationship. Libby and her antics can take Greg and Peyton away from Elena again, and I can totally understand where she is coming from with her fears. I think Greg handled it beautifully.

Side-note #2: APUTI! I absolutely adore him, he is mushiest teddy bear ever, ugh <3

M.E. Carter handled post-divorce and the realities of the aftermath and what it entails beautifully. I like the way of all the characters are not perfect or imperfect. Do they have flaws? Yes, of course, they are human and it is natural for us humans to make mistakes, but there is also what is beautiful about us. I am always impressed in how M.E. Carter portrays the characters as the most down to earth people who are so realistic, they could pop out of the book and be real life people you actually know.

One of my favourite moment of the book was between the sweetest and it almost broke my heart. Trust me, your heart will ache for both of them.

"Greg and I are a team" - Elena.
This quote is very important. While this quote may seem inconsequential for most people, for me it shows the importance of someone like Elena, who not too long ago went through a divorce, can trust a man so much that she comes a "we" again. This is evidence that not only has Elena opened herself up to love again, but that she already is there with Greg. They are each others HEA.

"I love them. They're my girls. All four of you are. I want to take care of all of you and make you happy" - Greg.

I was pulled right into this story. This story has laughs, fun, secrets, pain, and heartbreak. It deals with life issues that people deal with every day.

Before reading this story please read the below books first
Getting a Grip (#MyNewLife, #1)

This is more of Elena and Greg's story. After Greg left her in the last book Elena is trying to move on with her life. This book picks up roughly nine months after the last book. Just when she is starting to take the steps to move on and get over him he is back. Greg wants Elena and is back and determined to have her but does he fit into her life anymore? Can these two figure out a way to be together or is this the final closure that they both need before moving on? Can Elena let him back into her life after he broke her heart? Is he worth risking even more pain if she must let him go again?

I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

3.75 Stars! Balance Check is the conclusion to Greg and Elena’s love story. It’s very short, but wraps up any unanswered questions and is written in a two-person POV.

Summary:
Nine months ago, Greg Brady sacrificed his own happiness to do right by his daughter. But every day since he watched Elena Monroe in his rearview mirror has been spent praying for circumstances to change. His prayers were answered and everything miraculously fell into place, but can he win back the love of his life when there’s still the chance of breaking her heart all over again? Elena is doing her best to move on without the man she loves, and for the most part, she’s succeeding. Her heart is still broken, though, and she’s not sure it will ever be whole again. When Greg suddenly pops back into her life, her world isn’t so balanced anymore. Between new jobs, crazy exes, and rambunctious kids, adding love to the crazy train of life can be messy. Are Greg and Elena both in a place to balance it all, together, while reaching for what their heart’s desire?

I really liked both Greg and Elena in book one. It was a story that surprised me with how connected I became to the characters, Elena especially. While I wasn’t satisfied with how book one ended, I had to know if Greg and Elena would end up together, so reading book two was a must. This part of the book saw Elena a lot more comfortable with who she is and where she’s headed. Her heart was broken, but she was living her life as best as she knew how. Greg on the other hand still had some things to sort out, mainly with his ex, before he could really live. I still felt they had a lot of chemistry in this book, but there were no steamy scenes at all and it could have benefitted from at least one. While I enjoyed getting the end of their story, I really didn’t feel that a second book was needed. For me, it really could have all been written into a longer first instalment. That said, I still liked reading about these characters. I absolutely loved watching Greg stand up to his ex and really do what was right for not only is little girl, but also himself and Elena. The epilogue is what I loved most, though. Epilogues are important for me, and this one really knocked it outta the park. Overall, it was a nice read, maybe unnecessary, but nice, and it was great to get our HEA. I am looking forward to Joie’s story. ♡

I really really liked how the second part of Greg and Elena's story was developed.
This second book takes off when Greg returns to live in the same city as Elena after an absence of 9 months.

I think that Elena was the one who changed the most during this time: she grew stronger, she's now sure of herself and doesn't let anyone put her underneath them. I really admired this new version of Elena, and I think that yes, Greg going away made her suffer, but gave her also the occasion to become the woman she was meant to be. She's now an independent woman, and stronger because of it.

Also Greg grew up in a way, especially considering his attitude towards Libby. It was great to see him finally put a stop on her craziness when she threaten to flip over his life again.
And he was the same great man of the first book, so I was only happy to see that he and Elena managed to overcome their insecurities and difficulties to get their happily ever after.

It was once again soooo funny to read about Callie, she's such an hilarious woman! And Deborah was also a nice addition to their girl posse. I liked how she made Elena show her new self, not the old insecure woman of the first times after the divorce.

And like the first book, one of the things that comes to my mind when I think about Balance Check is that it's a book about real life, and everyone could be a Elena, Greg or Callie. The difficulties they have to deal with are ones of everyday life, discussions, children, parenting methods, love after a divorce and so on. I liked this, really much. Many people can and will recognise themselves in one or more characters from Balance Check.

I absolutely fell in love with M.E. Carter’s book, Getting a Grip. Although I just recently read it, I’ve been dying for the continuation of Elena and Greg’s story.

If you haven’t read Getting A Grip, please do not read this post as it will contain spoilers!!!

Greg had to leave the love of his life, Elena, behind to follow his crazy ex-wife and their daughter to a new city. Greg is a father who wants to be present in his daughter’s life no matter what the cost.

Elena is completely and utterly heartbroken but understands Greg’s reason for leaving. However, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and Elena is back in full force. Recently hired as a secretary at her kids’ elementary school with more self-esteem than before, things are looking up for her. Hell, even the hot, young teacher Tripp is interested in going out to dinner with her.

But Elena’s not sure if she’s ready. And just when she thinks she is...Greg is home and ready to get back to the relationship they once had.

I loved Balance Check. Elena understood Greg’s leaving but was hesitant when he returned. Greg is doing everything he can for his daughter, Elena and her girls. I love that this relationship isn’t perfect. Flaws, self doubt, and life just get in the way. I truly appreciate the way

“A balance check is a way of taking a pause in the middle of your routine so you can readjust so you don’t fall.”

I adore M.E. Carter’s work. It’s made me laugh, I’ve cried my eyes out and I have a little more of an understanding of life with each book I read of hers.

When we last left Elena in Getting a Grip, the love of her life had just left her in order to maintain a relationship with his young daughter in another state. Months later finds Elena maybe still missing Greg but also finding her groove, getting a job, getting the attention of a handsome younger man, finding routine and being generally happy.

Little does she know that her world may be thrown upside down again...or maybe it will be finally righted. Only time will tell. The same wonderful snark, snappy comebacks, witty conversations and support from the first book are still here...some made me laugh out loud and spit up my drink...Callie's caffeine prank lol. But also still here are the wonderful lessons that we seem to forget as we trudge through our daily lives. Our ability to judge not only ourselves but others so harshly is something I think most of us have to deal with and exercise restraint with. Elena is a work in progress but it is wonderful to know that she is done letting others walk all over her and define who she is. We all need a balance check...you know...taking a pause and fixing things that are wrong before you move forward. I absolutely love the idea of using gymnastics terms and relating them to how we should live our lives.

I think M.E. said it best in her acknowledgement:

"Every Elena out there: There are Greg’s out there. Don’t overlook him because he has a pot belly or a balding head or a crazy ex. We deserve a Greg. But the Greg’s deserve us, too. He doesn’t have to be a book boyfriend to be the perfect man for you. Don’t miss him."

I'm so glad this book picks up right where it left off from the last book. I hate books that end in a cliffhanger. And if I had to wait for this book.... I would have been going out of my mind!

The insecurities and body issues wasn't as bad in this book as it was in the last book. The last book was all about body issues and low self esteem. This book was more about moving on and growing. Elena really embraced herself in this book. She had moved on and started to really take care of herself. I think Greg really helped her with all that too. He made her see herself and all her imperfections as he saw her. He thought she was beautiful.

The way things left off in the last book had me feeling heartbroken for Elena and Greg. I was wondering how things were going to play out. I have to admit. I felt like something was missing in this book. I think the book needed a bit of drama. And I thought I was going to get that when Tripp was introduced. I don't want to give anything away. But, I was a bit let down how that all played out.

I really enjoyed all the characters in this book. Callie was a solid best friend. She was always there for Elena. I don't know what was going on with her son! Omg... reading everything Christopher would do was so exhausting! The poor woman could never relax!

Overall this was a good read. I'm glad I read it.

Balance Check is the second book in #mynewlife series. I'm happy to say that this book is done because in book 1 I felt that it ended with a cliffy. Plus I wanted to know what was going to happen! We continue on with the lives of Elena and Greg. It's been 9 months since Greg moved away and Elena is still a mess. She has to get it together and get a job first so she is receptionist at elementary school. She still takes her kid to the gym and she gets shocked by Greg being there. She is full of emotions , mainly mad at him for at least not letting her know.

Greg couldn't get Elena out of his mind. He thought it was too late with coming back.

Elena tried to cut off all ties with Greg but it was hard. She was afraid of getting her heart broken again with Libby moving and having to take Payton which forces Greg to follow them.

This story was a short , quick read. You have to read Get a Grip first. I had questions in book 1 and they are answered with reading this book so thank you M.E. Carter! Greg and Elena have a second chance at love!!

Life goes on…. The end of Getting a Grip left us in limbo…. What would happen? Would Greg and Elena continue their relationship long distance? Will Callie find success as a RowRow consultant?
These are important issues not to mention kids, schedules, ex-spouses, and play dates.

Book #2 in the My New Life series picks up with Elena and Greg moving on. Both finding it too difficult to keep things going with their hectic schedules and craziness that is life. The distance has taken its toll. Heartbroken but resilient, Elena bravely moves forward. She gets a job at the school her children attend. All while shuffling her children to various activities and trying to maintain some sense of balance.

But life is full of surprises! Greg returns but life has moved on. Getting back to the way things were is not always so simple. Elena is confused and feels like an afterthought. She is also fearful of Greg leaving again.

The story is charming and funny. I loved the banter throughout the book. Callie is back and funnier than ever! The kids are crazy and funny as well. I’m sure we can all relate to the shenanigans that occur with the kids! We also get a bit of drama and we meet some new friends. A very enjoyable end to Greg and Elena’s story! The connection that Greg and Elena share is so sweet and left a warm spot in my heart.

Balance Check by M.E. Carter is the next great installment in the #MyNewLife Series.
Elena and Greg´s story continues.
Greg was forced to leave his life and love behind and move away.
Elena is heartbroken but understands his reasons. There is no other way it seems. Slowly she puts herself back together. She´s stronger and with more self-esteem than ever.
But suddenly he´s back and wants her in his life again. But that´s not as easy as it seems.
I mean, come on, she was Let Behind !! hence the reasons, she was left behind. And what happens if Greg decides he has to leave again?
M y heart was bleeding for the characters. I could understand Greg´s reasons, and I could understand Elena´s hesitation. Both have flaws and that makes the characters so loveable. They are not the perfect bookboy/girl friend. No they have doubts, flaws and a every day life they have to live. And that makes them so loveable. They´re honest and real. And that I love about them.
I can´t say how much I love the writing, ME Carter gets me everytime I read one of her books. She gets me. I lough, I cry and I suffer with the characters. I love her writing, so much. I lovce the story and I love the words. And mostly I love her characters.
I highly recommend this great read and wish I could give more than 5 stars. Thank you so much, ME Carter, you rock !!
