When Stars Burn Out Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,364 ratings

Stars die in one of two ways.

So slowly that each layer burning out feels like agony … or suddenly, exploding into a million pieces before the universe even has a grasp of what is happening.

When Paxton Shaw left Demi Rosen without so much as a goodbye, he stole her shine in both manners.

Now, eight years later, he’s trying to pull her back into his orbit. The nation’s most beloved football player, a tight end with a seriously tight end, has finally realized Demi is the one who got away.

But she’s a different woman than the weak girl who used to come running whenever he called in the middle of the night. Strong, successful, her life’s mission being to grant the wishes of children whose flames have all but been extinguished.

And untouchable, as dark and cold as a midnight sky with no moon in sight.

When one special child forces their star-crossed paths to collide, it’s impossible to keep the feelings of their past buried. Paxton had been her Halley’s Comet; the once in a lifetime love that scorched Demi’s heart in the most spectacular of fashions.

She promised herself she would never make that mistake again. But, how can she forget the dreams of love she once had, when Paxton wants to make them come true?

When a Prologue can stir up that much emotion, you know you’re in for an amazing story! Two ex-lovers, an angst ridden past and a second chance that may or may not be in the stars.

Back in college, Demi was nothing more than a booty call to Paxton although she wanted so much more. Nine years later, she is no longer the insecure pushover used by Paxton. She now runs a very successful charity that grants wishes to ill children, while Paxton is an all-star player with the NFL. The stars align and they’re put back in each other’s paths. Guilt may plague Paxton for the way he treated Demi in the past, but she wants nothing to do with the guy who left without a word and crushed her heart. I didn’t blame Demi one bit because I also hated the Paxton she knew in college, but oh so loved the man he’d become now. I was cheering for these two and their happily ever after!

This was my first book from this author and I'm so glad I finally dived into one of her books!! What a sweet and fun read and Pax and Demi's relationship is all kinds of sexy and sweet. I loved them endlessly and I loved that Carrie Aarons gives us a look into their past so we see how and why their connection in the present is the way it is. You definitly want to throat punch younger Pax for how he treated Demi, and you definitly don't want to love his present self as much as you do. But boy, does the man ever redeem himself. You can understand his need to put his future and career ahead of all his relationship choices, and the things that happen in his life allow him to make the choices he might not have had his life not taken that path. He knows this, and does everything he can to win back the girl who he mistreated and let slip through his fingers. (talk about charming the pants off of her)

Demi, oh Demi. I love her, the job that she does, and how she still carefully dances around their relationship at first to protect her heart. I'm glad she didn't fall head first right away into Pax's sexy arms. She made him work for it a bit. Her past has also shaped her and encouraged her to make the choices she has, including why she works in the field she does (and she's a CEO, hands up for the strong independent woman!) And while I loved her as a person, I loved her and Pax together. They were sweet, and funny and sexy! And I really liked that the sexy time wasn't overwhelming or in every chapter of the book. it was spread out perfectly and made me enjoy the book that much more.

Over all, I really really enjoyed this book so much. it was sweet, swoony, heart wrenchingly sad, and had that little touch of angst that we all know and love in a romance book. I am so glad I've finally read a book by this author and am now making sure to read more of her books and add them to my TBR! A solid 4.5 stars for me!

Second chance romance. This is a dual POV that also flashes back and forth between present and past. Demi and Paxton had the no strings attached relationship during college much to the dismay of Demi. Paxton was a typical arrogant selfish jock who took from Demi every last drop of love and self esteem she had to give. Fast forward eight years and fate has given them a second chance to get their love story right. A bit of a tearjerker at times. Spoiler and triggers include death of a child, death of parents, cheating

This was a different second chance romance compared to what I've read in the past. Paxton and Demi's love story in college wasn't your typical love story. Paxton was an egotistical football player who strung Demi along for two years. Honestly, it was pretty heartbreaking to read the stories about their past romance. Paxton was a jerk who really didn't deserve a second chance at Demi.

When they reconnect 8 years after Paxton ghosted Demi, she wants nothing to do with him. There is a scene earlier on in the book where she tells him off and honestly, I was so proud of her character. I have to give it to Paxton though, he was determined to win her back.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read.

Spanish & English Opinion

ESP ::

ENG ::

I love this author. Her writing style is amazing and I’m a huge fan of her sports romance.
This story is great. It has the perfect ingredients in their past to create lots of groveling in the present.

And it happens! And I love that, but then... we achieved that moment and after that, many chapters felt extra.

Still, the book is nice and I love the HEA.

When I saw the beautiful cover and title, WHEN STARS BURNOUT, I wanted to read this latest book by Carrie Aarons. They say you can't tell a book by it's cover, but this book did not disappoint. It is a beautiful Second Chance Romance. But from the Prologue I was worried that I could never like Paxton Shaw.

Demi Rosen was madly in love with the college football's star player. For two years she waited by her phone, because when Paxton called, she would go. She had never or never would, say no. Her friends were disapproving of her being at his beck and call. She knows she is weak, but knows she won't stop. Because being with him is the best high she had ever known. Because when he touches her, there is no better feeling in the entire world. Paxton's relationship with Demi (if you could even call it that) when they were in college, was him being a total jerk. When Paxton Shaw left Demi Rosen without so much as a goodbye, he took her star shine with him. Her universe exploded!

Eight years have passed since she had last laid eyes on Paxton Shaw. Demi had started her own charitable company, and was CEO of Wish Upon a Star. She had started it with an inheritance from her grandfather when he died. She lost a younger brother to cancer when he was only seven. All the children that she worked with now reminded her of stars who might lose their shine here on earth, but they would be watching from above. Imagine her surprise when the wish of Ryan, one of her favorite children at Wish Upon a Star, had his very wish standing in front of her. Paxton Shaw, all-star tight end in the National Football League was now playing here in Charlotte. She wanted to run, but being the professional that she was, she stepped forward to help Ryan's wish come true.

Both of them were now thirty years old. They were not the young college students, and both had drastic changes in their lives. Demi felt he had ruined her for anyone else, forever, and was never going to be hurt by him again. Paxton was filled with guilt over how he had treated her back then. How his life would be so different if they had only both committed to each other. He wanted her now like he never had back then. She denied him, but every time she saw him, amnesia set in where the feelings of abandonment were concerned. That he was the earth and she was the moon, and she couldn't help but get pulled back to him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet & Romantic Second-chance Story!

I never read anything by Carrie til earlier this year and she is quickly becoming one of my one-click authors for sweet and sexy reads.

When I read the blurb for this one, there was no doubt in my mind that I had to read this one. And Carrie did not let me down.

"Because being with him is the best high I've ever known.
Because when he touches me, there is no better feeling in the entire world.
Because I'm the moth and he's the flame.
And the thing is, I know that he wouldn't even notice if I burned completely."

Demi and Paxton had an odd relationship, if you can call it that, in college. She wanted more and he was the stereotypical college football player that didn't want to be tied down to one girl. Whereas Demi looked at him like he hung the moon and one day she would wear him down.

Years later, they see one another again but Demi has her walls up high and strong. Paxton is now a huge pro football player and she is the CEO of her own company. Demi wants nothing to do with him but he's determined to prove he's nothing like the college boy she remembers.

"A person doesn't forget the dismantling of their heart, ventricle by ventricle."

Carrie does a really nice job of switching between past and present from both their POVs, giving the readers the best of both worlds. Seeing how Paxton has matured helps Demi understand him more. And seeing how hurt Demi was in the past, makes us understand the walls she has up.

Paxton and Demi's relationship is a sweet and beautiful story. Nothing is too fast and these two learn a lot about one another. I love that Paxton stops at nothing with Demi - he is dead set on winning her over. While, I did wish there was more angst and drama, I still enjoyed this one.

Another rock solid story from Carrie.

The book was okay but didn’t have any passion and overall felt a little boring. I prefer books to have a little bit of a tug on my emotions good or bad and this was just bland.
