Unexpected Arrivals: A Geneva Key Beach Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 737 ratings

Their story started in high school on the affluent shores of Geneva Key. Years later, that same beach would bring them full circle in this second-chance romance filled with secrets and surprises, twists and turns.

An unexpected arrival brought our worlds together...

From the moment I saw Cora walking the halls of our high school, I was drawn to her. From graduation to college, and life beyond, our story wasn’t without its ups and downs. But we had finally settled into happily wedded bliss...

Until a certified letter turned our world upside down.

When I fell for James I was swept up in his plans and aspirations, even choosing the same college to be with him. Until the fear of resentment if I gave up my dreams prompted me to end things and follow my career to Paris. Never had I been happier than when James showed up years later.

Little did either of us know, our time apart had created a secret that could destroy our entire future.

Now, life's unexpected arrivals threatened to tear our world apart.

USA Today Bestselling author, Stephie Walls is a lover of words—the more poetic the better. She lives on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina in her own veritable zoo with two dogs, three cats, and Magoo (in no preferential order). She would thrive on coffee, books, and Charlie Hunnam if it were possible, but since it’s not, add in some Chinese food or sushi and she’s one happy girl.

Unexpected Arrivals grabbed my breath from the beginning and held it until the very last word! Stephie Walls books just keep getting better and better! She again works a hard, very real, topic in to this tale that is utterly captivating. Covering a large time span in a manner where the story doesn't drag and you stay on the edge of your seat with anticipation isn't easy, but Stephie Walls handled it remarkably well.
Unexpected Arrivals contains well placed glimpses in to the past that carefully reveal an intricate backstory. With these reveals, carefully built webs of deceit untangle and truths come out, while the humor woven in is a perfect balance where you'll both laugh and cry. “You look like my daddy after my mommy yells at him. Did Mrs. Carpenter yell at you?” “Not yet, but I’m sure she will.” I mumbled under my breath, “Right before she files for divorce.”
The story, wisely written in three parts, begins with James and Cora in high school discovering each other, and then discovering themselves throughout the years. "For the first time in my life, I breathed for someone else. My heart pumped to fuel my body to make her day better. She gave the same in return. There was nothing about our relationship that was one-sided." After a tumultuous relationship, James has finally found his happiness only to have the shock of a DNA request dropped at his feet. "There hadn’t been a text, an email, a phone call, not even a Facebook message. She’d disappeared from my life as randomly as she’d stumbled into it." Then BOOM! We need your DNA. (Note: There is NO CHEATING...although I do keep hearing Ross from Friends screaming, "WE WERE ON A BREAK!") Not the point.
One of my favorite things about Unexpected Arrivals is seeing the perspective of various characters. These perspective changes tie everything together beautifully. My favorite note: This is the saddest, most beautiful love story. Cora and James, brought together by tragedy, are absolutely beautiful together. Unexpected Arrivals is a MUST READ!!!

Cora and James met each other during high school, when Cora was hit by destiny. Both youngsters were from wealthy families and at the time both went through a rough time with their families. Maybe this was what knit them together or maybe the fact that they lived in a rather isolated area forged their relationship…. Or …. Maybe these 2 were just made for each other? In any case, Cora and James stayed together during their adolescence, they went to college together and only then Cora decided to give priority to her professional ambitions, which impacted the relation greatly. The reasoning behind her decision was very logical and I could completely relate to her way of thinking. I could also relate to James’s reaction to Cora’s decision and it was interesting to observe, how these 2 matured and worked on themselves to find the way to each other again.

During their short separation James met and dated other women. Of course one of these flings would have “consequences” and of course the young couple had to face these consequences. Did it destroy their relationship? No, not really – on the contrary. And it was absolutely wonderful and entertaining to read how they mastered this new situation.

Generally speaking this was an interesting read, especially because the plot was so different to what I’m used to. The chapters of the books were written in 1st person singular and the chapters alternated between James’s and Cora’s POV. Not that this is my preferred reading style but in this case if fit the book perfectly and gave deep insights into their thought processes.

One of James’s flirts was more significant than the other ladies he dated. Her story was interesting bonus material to the main plot. Initially the author mastered it perfectly to connect this subplot to the main plot. However, in the continuation she exceeded and overdid it, leading to twists and turns that were highly implausible and impacted negatively the carefully crafted connection between main and subplot. What a pity! In any case, a very nice and entertaining book. I can only but recommend it!

UNEXPECTED ARRIVALS is a wonderful love story that spans from high school, through college, and after college graduation to present day. The Prologue sucks you into the story when James (Carp) Carpenter, who is happily married to the love of his life Cora Chase, now Cora Carpenter, when he receives a letter. It is a formal request to arrange a paternity test (DNA) for minor child Airy. He barely remembered Chelsea Airy and they had only gone out once. He hadn't heard from her since he had gotten engaged to Cora. She had disappeared from his life. He was afraid that Cora, who never wanted children, would leave him.

Fifteen years earlier than the Prologue, James was a high school junior in Harbrook High located on Geneva Key. When he went to take a seat in second period, it was already occupied by a new girl. He had never seen eyes so green, and just like that their souls collided and he'd found the love of his life. Her parents had been killed in a plane crash only a week ago. She had moved from New York to Geneva Key to live with her very rich grandparents. She was lost and alone and James became her lifeline. She became his world. She followed him to the college of his choice. They thought they would always be together, but unforeseen turn of events and not all things last forever. She'd chosen her path, and now he'd have to blaze his own without her. Whether they could find their way back to each other was a different kind of story.

There are many different twist and turns in this book. Many surprises that you won't see coming. I've read quite a few books by Stephie Walls, but this is my new favorite. Life is never perfect, and neither is an epic love story. I highly recommend reading this book.

This was my first book by Stephie and I very much enjoyed it my only negative was at times it felt a little long before arriving at the point. This book is set up in 3 parts, present, past and then back to the present, while it was important to get the past part of Cora and James story it felt a little to long in places and by the time we got back to the present it was a short hand version. While not a perfect read for me it was still a good story that I enjoyed

This is the first book I've read by this author, but I was drawn in by the cover. However, I have mixed feelings about this book. The prologue opened up with a promising start, it left us wondering what James was going to do about the news of a son. Then chapter one started back in james and Cora's high school days. We see this romance blossom and fizzle out over x amount of years. Then Chelsea comes on the scene, out of nowhere, and throws a curveball into the mix. I didn't really connect with Chelsea or Cora and that's what's leaving me with mixed emotions, because at about 70% into the book we return to present day, we find out about the child James knew nothing about, and then the true story really starts. We get the twisted tale, cora's back story, and then it ends. The past story really did nothing for me. The ending I liked. I finally got to see the true Cora and James.
