THIEF (Boston Underworld Book 5) Kindle Edition
I live by a code that can’t be bent or broken. It’s my duty to my family to marry an Italian man. The stars are already aligned.
But Nikolai Kozlov re-writes my destiny with five simple words.
You belong to me now.
He's Russian mafiya. A thief. A skilled liar with no moral boundaries. He’s everything I’ve been taught to hate. A man who stands for nothing. A man who takes what he wants without a second thought.
And what he wants is me.
He thinks he controls my fate, but what he doesn’t know is, sometimes it’s the good girls you have to watch out for.
***
I’m a dangerous man.
I live by a code. The Vory code. It’s my duty to protect the brotherhood. I’ll destroy anyone who threatens that, including her.
She’s a dancer. A beautiful little doll. My prisoner, and my new favorite puppet. This mafia princess thinks she has me under her spell, but in the end, she’s simply collateral.
It’s a shame to destroy precious things.
But this is what bad men do.

Now, this is Nikolai’s story – the Boston Underworld male that somehow managed to become a close second to Ronan on my favorites list. His and Tanaka’s story beautifully emotional, dark, and yet a lot sweet. It’s an unconventional yet powerful combination and what makes this story so special.
This and their circumstances, the unusual way how they find another in the first place. The sacrifices they are willing to make for their love, their strong connection. The ballet – beautiful and graceful –, which is Tanaka’s whole life. The ruthlessness and dirty mouth from Nikolai, who isn’t really a conventional hero, nor a true anti-hero…
The list is endless and every word that makes up their story is pure perfection. It’s everything that always has me coming back for more of A. Zavarelli’s brilliant storytelling, no matter which genre her story fits into. This woman never ceases to amaze me, to stun me, to shatter me and render me completely speechless, emotions overflowing and all over the place. And this series especially will always stay close to my heart. It’s re-read-worthy time and again, which isn’t something I usually do.
I cannot recommend the Boston Underworld series highly enough.
So, if you haven’t even started this series yet – what the hell are you waiting for?!
Contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy adult intimate scenes (dominance; submission; consensual / non-consensual acts; rape; restraints; torture; mental, physical and sexual assault; etc.) and violence (kidnapping; abduction; murder; rape; torture; harassment; stalking; sabotage; betrayal; human trafficking; enslavement; assault; etc.).
Also contains scenes with a theme of mental illness involving anxiety, depression, bipolar, suicide, etc. Readers sensitive to topics such as these should exercise caution.
Contains grammatical issues mainly typos, incorrect, missing, and extra words. I am trying to mention these for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is being read, as errors interrupt the flow.
⛔️ If you have not read the previous stories, the following will contain spoilers.
The world building is good, but a lot of the story overlaps with previous ones where they intersect with the characters. The scenes are repeated, but with the POV from the current character perspective. Such as when Alexei is betrayed and his hearing loss is exposed, the Christmas party when Talia met Tanaka, and when Alexei was told that Talia had died. Although more information is provided throughout about Nikolai and Tanaka, it is about 2/3 of the way through the story before new storyline plots are introduced.
We learn in the beginning more about Tanaka’s background, life and how she came to be with Nikolai. We also learn about Nikolai’s background, his talent, and what his main position is in the Russian mafia. (Hint it is nothing something I would have guessed if given 10 years.)
The reason for my rating is there were a few scenes that were out of place and did not have any further discussion or reference. Tanaka is supposed to be pure, sheltered, etc., but somehow a couple of weeks into her stay, she walks into Nikolai’s office while another female is on her knees “servicing him” and apparently it wasn’t the first time. Nothing further about how the situation came about previously, her thoughts, her shock, her dismay, her secret thrill at discovering something about sex, etc.
With some revisions I would easily give this story 5 stars. The plot is excellent, gruesome and action packed, with a nice pace and a couple of twists. I will definitely be reading this series again sometime in the future.
Ever since I read the first page of Crow, Boston Underworld series Book 1, this series has been one of my favorites. Nikolai is Alexei’s younger brother and we are introduced to him in Ghost. They have a rocky history and I loved hearing it from Nika’s pov.
“I am a thief at heart. Art being my specialty, I steal it, and I create it, and sometimes, I even destroy it.”
Nikolai is a raw, harsh, powerful Russian Avtoritet and “Thief in law.” His plan is set in motion and he has his eyes on one thing and it’s named vengeance. Nika is very skillful and talented but it was his passion that took me by surprise and he definitely gave Alexei a run for his money. He takes care of what is his even if it is only considered a temporary possession.
“For now, I am a slave to his touch. A servant to his commands. Another doll for his collection. Pretty and untainted by anyone but him.”
Tanaka is a sheltered Italian mafia princess who lives for one thing, dancing. She is a beautiful, graceful ballerina, sadly her fate has already been decided for her and dancing is not part of the deal. There are so many layers to her character and I loved witnessing them being peeled back one by one, exposing her true self and desires.
“I need ballet like I need air to breathe. It is my life. My heart. My soul. And the thing I fear most is what will become of me if I am no longer a dancer.”
This book is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. You will be heartbroken, anxious, hopeful, surprised and squirming in your seat. I am so incredibly sad this series is over but Nikolai and Tanaka’s story was brilliantly told and a perfect ending for it.
If you haven’t read the Boston Underworld series STOP what you are doing and read it today, you will not be disappointed!
“My loyalty is with you, now and forever.”

If you are a sucker for the mafia trope don't hesitate to pick up any book from this series. A Zavarelli won't let you down
I do wish I would have checked for TWs as I wasn’t expecting Tanaka to have an ED. But Ash does an amazing job writing about it in a way that didn’t get to me. I enjoyed Nikolai and Tanaka as a pairing and I wasn’t expecting a book on them. I’m not 100% sold on how quick their chemistry was and how quick she was to give herself after constantly bringing up beliefs in how she was raised. But I did enjoy reading her journey and how she healed. And I did enjoy the way Nikolai enjoyed her as well.
