The Second We Met: An enemies-to-lovers romance (Fulton U) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 4,040 ratings

Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.

That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.

Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my words.

Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing blue eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.

Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy...

Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.

Guess who’s my new boss?

Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.

It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.

Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens...one screw at a time.

Surprised once again :)
(WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD. READERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED)•Rate: 7/10•The Second We Met was once again a book that surprised me. The first ten chapters, I had to push myself to keep reading because there wasn’t anything that interested me. But once again I am glad I pushed myself to keep reading because I fell in love with Nix & Elle. I loved how their relationship progressed & how they showed their beautiful true colors to each other after hating each other for so long. Even though this book focused more on themselves, their personalities, & their relationship it was still enjoyable. I loved it when Nix would use his status to help Elle, how open she was about being wrong, & the way they just fix together, worked. I also loved the P names the guys had going on. Patrick, Philip, & Phoenix. Grandpa Patrick was so cute & I loved every scene he was in. The relationship between Philip & Nix was rough at first but in the end, Philip did admit his wrongs and opened up to Nix about his wife’s passing. I find it amazing when a man opens up.When Nix opened up to Elle & seeing that yes, a man can cry even when something hurts him. He let himself be vulnerable around Elle & his friends. He didn’t have that whole “I’m a man so I have to hide my feelings” type of thing. I did end up crying when he was telling Elle how she hurt him, how he loved her & she needed to realize she was practically self sabotaging herself when it came to letting someone love her. I also cried when Nix & his dad spoke about his wrongs, Mix’s mom, & Patrick not going to Philip’s games. This book was so sweet & romantic. I did love the ending & I am so excited for Berk’s & Jules story. Also, before I end this, I would like to say, Maya Hughes if one day (hopefully one day) when I become an author & we meet, can we play a nerf gun game? You described the game to fun and well. I need to play it.

It’s anything but love at first sight between Elle and Nix. Hate at first sight would be more accurate. He may be the big man on campus, but Elle has no problem calling the cops when one of Nix's parties gets out of hand. Now Nix needs to clean up his image and do some volunteering in the community. Can you guess who his boss is? Yep, it's Elle. But as they work together, they both begin to see they might have misjudged each other, and that’s when things get interesting.

The tension between these two is delightfully delicious, their banter wildly entertaining, and their chemistry is explosive. If I know ahead of time a book is new adult I often pass on it, fearing the characters will be annoying in their immaturity. These skillfully written characters, however, make me think I just might be missing out on some great writing. Both have far more layers and depth than seen at first glance and a vulnerability that humanizes them and endears them to the reader.

The secondary characters are equally entertaining and unique, with a smooth, moving pace to the story so that this one practically reads itself and has me eager for more from this Fulton U bunch I’ve grown attached to. If you like a story that makes you laugh, takes your emotions on a wild ride and has you believing in happily ever afters, you'll love Nix and Elle's story!

With one look...they started a relationship they never meant to.
With one wrong number...they became a thorn in each other side.
Preconceived notions, misguided judgments, and pasts held them in a war they never intended to start.

The Second We Met is a fun and entertaining enemies to lovers story. With some seriously entertaining secondary characters, best friends, and foreshadowing, it's hard not to be ready for the next installments of Fulton U. I appreciate the realistic nature of Elle's hang ups. I saw some other people bashing our heroine in reviews. Saying she wasn't realistic. I may never have gone to college but I knew plenty of people like Elle. People struggling to find their own place, walls up to keep past hurts away, protecting themselves from future heartache. Totally not real...uh huh!

The Second We Met is an apt title because well their meet cute is unforgettable but it's also a nod to being the second in the series and that makes me unreasonably giddy for unknown reasons.

With their emotional tolls on each other and wildly chaotic relationship, B and E and the Golden Boy will have you swept up in their mess before you even realize it. Careful, they aren't the only ones out to snare you for their cause!

I have waited for this book just b/c of the blurb! After seeing Nix nude, how would Elle react? Not so well apparently. Elle has been feuding with Nix from that day. She’s strung out b/c she has so many obligations, monetary and otherwise. I would like to have known a little more about how she came down from upper-middle class (formerly drove an S-Class Mercedes in HS) to borderline destitute.
Phoenix Russo, seemingly cocky football quarterback and in the words of Elle, “kind of gorgeous that made you wonder if he weren’t real-life CGI.” What Elle doesn’t know is that Nix has his demons too. When Elle and Nix end up on the same project, things begin to change. WOW! Just WOW. Love the metamorphosis.
Ms. Hughes can write some of the sweetest steamy scenes ever written. There is humor, angst and tear-inducing moments, all of which finishes with a beautiful HEA. I have bookmarked so many scenes in this book it looks like a rainbow ;-)
I volunteered to review an ARC and it comes highly recommended. This one gets 10 Stars! I want to see the movie. I CAN’T wait for Berk and Jules’ story!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars "Nothing in life was permanent. We have to soak up what we can when we can."
Reviewed in India on May 4, 2021
This book is about Pheonix (Nix) Russo a football player and the best friend of Reece (from book 1). And then there's Ella Masterson- his next door neighbour who called the cops on him when him and his friends were having a party with loud music at their house. (multiple times)
"One second we’re cool and the next you’re biting my dam head off. It’s been like this since the second we met.”
Elle had a bad past because she got cheated on by both her ex-boyfriends. One of them was a football player so, she has major trust issues and when she met Nix, she instantly judged him to be an entitled rich kid who got away with everything when he flashed someone a smile. She also did some volunteering activities and it seemed that she genuinely cared about that. (But I can't overlook the fact that she did all that to get an award . The same award for which one of her ex-boyfriends was competing too.)
"I’d hefted a championship trophy over my head, but this felt like a win I’d never forget. My first completely unprompted smile from her lit me up like a dam Christmas tree."
But, Nix was instantly captivated by her since the moment they met. He seemed to be determined to get under her skin. His dad was a former professional football player and he wanted Nix to get drafted and play professionally even though he was always interested in cooking and helping out at his grandfather's restaurant. When Elle calls the cops on him, that leads his dad to enroll him in some community work and there he crosses paths with Elle again.
"You call me a liar, but you’re lying to yourself. You know who I am. You’re one of the few people who do."
Elle was a bit too rude and judgemental for my liking. At times I felt that she was a bit selfish and didn't deserve Nix at all. But, ingnoring all these flaws, she was a really good friend to Jules. Their dynamic was just adorable.
"You’re so worried about being hurt that you can’t even see that you’re hurting the people around you. I love you and would never hurt you like this. No matter what you think, know that’s true.”
I'm so glad that Nix often called her out on her bs and double standards. I get that Elle had a bad past relationship history but that didn't give her a right to act rudely and judge some people around her without reading knowing them. These traits didn't make me like her character until the very end. Maybe if something more about her past had been revealed, I would've connected with her.
But, I'm definitely eager to read how Jules is going to tackle the note situation with Berk. So, I'm definitely excited to read the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, I think I'm gonna go out of words to how much this book amazed me.

I think there's not enough space in this website to describe all the feelings Elle and Nix got out of me. After The Perfect First, I would thought it was not possible for me to love a couple in this series even more, but Elle & Nix completely made me see how wrong I was.

First of all, I love the whole enemies to lovers thing. I think Maya did SO good with the trope, she avoided any unnecessary drama and made it Elle so loyal to her own personality. I feel like Elle was Elle from the very beginning and never, EVER, went with the whole "I'm right he's wrong" thing, because that's not who she is. I just love how real and down to earth she was, and how she always came forward when she realized she was in the wrong side of things. Elle is so smart, so caring, so good, she has a heart of gold, and honestly, I think it's impossible to end this book not loving her with every single bone in your body. She's amazing.

Nix is not very far from it. He is such an awesome guy, I would LOVE to be friends with him in real life. From the start, I think the whole "rich spoiled jackass athlete" thing made it so easy to see through him and realize how everyone looked at him and though he was JUST that, when he really wasn't. There's so much of him to see, and Maya really did amazing in showing all his layers and how complex he was.

I think most of the plot twists in this surprised me a lot, and at some point I was scared I was gonna run out of tears, because there was sad over sad over sad, I couldn't stop reading because all I wanted was that single moment where they would get their HEA.

After all, this book just surprised me a lot. I was already expecting so much of it, but Maya Hughes surprised the hell out of me and just blew out my expectations out of proportions. I didn't think it was even possible, but I might say it just became one of my favorite romance books of all times.

I love me a sports story and this didn’t disappoint. I read Reece & Seph’s story awhile ago and loved it. This book is just as wonderful. Phoenix is perfect. Truly. (Sorry I can’t get on board with the nickname, Nix 😞) Elle has been broken. Too often and even Phoenix’s love can’t seem to hold her together for long. Can’t wait for Jules and Berk’s story next!!
