She finds herself relocating to Martin’s Beach and becoming the legal guardian for her nephew. There she meets writer Parish Adams, who is grieving his son and fighting his own inner demons, whilst hiding from the world.
Let me start by saying, I did not read the synopsis for this book. And so, I did not know what the book was going to be about going in. I was pleasantly surprised though. This book was so heart-breaking, yet beautiful.
I just loved the friendship between Parish and Scarlett’s nephew Sam. I was great to see all the characters interact with each other and slowly get closer to becoming a new-found family.
I did roll my eyes a little bit at how hot Parish is still supposed to be. I mean after 5 years of heavy drinking and smoking, and just generally not taking care of himself, it is not believable that he would still be in shape and still have muscles. I mean we didn’t even see him exercise until way after they met. A bit of a nit-picky thing, but it did throw me off a little bit. Also, I know therapy is not accessible to everyone. But there were times in the story where I kept thinking, why are these characters not even considering getting a little therapy. I think it would have greatly helped the story feel a bit more well-rounded. That also took me out of the story a little bit.
Regardless, overall, this book was great. Well written, and I loved reading about the journeys the characters went on. It felt real and believable how the story progressed.
Narrated by Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell, they were fantastic with the narration. The story and characters feel real and were really brought the characters to life. Thoroughly enjoyed my listening experience!
I was provided a free audio copy of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.
Parish, 43 is in a deep depression. His young son was killed during a mass shooting at his school. He had full custody and they were a great team. This just about destroyed him. In fact he was well on his way to destroying himself with alcohol and cigarettes. He didn't think he would ever get over the loss of his son and learn to live again. He was barely making it one day at a time and he hoped every day for the peaceful passing of his own life.
Sam, his young neighbor lives next door to him on a private beach area in Maine. He is just another 14 year old kid that Parish sees and ignores. They have never officially met as Parish does not encourage visitors and gives out real loud vibes of Leave Me Alone. Sam has a sadness about him. Something has happened in Sam life to turn him so sad.
Scarlett is Sam's aunt. She has recently moved to the beach house with Sam. It is just the two of them and he wonders what happened to Sam's parents. Scarlett has been making efforts to get to know Parish but he wants none of it. He just wants to be left alone.
This is a great read. A great love story, one of love and loss and rebirth. It is a great story and the little twist at the end allows you to exhale!! I definitely recommend the book. Best read in a long time.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 6/7/2022.
Parish is overwhelmed by the loss of his son. Scarlet is dealing with the loss of her sister, Sam's Mom. Parish and Scarlett connect from the get go while learning to navigate loss and Scarlett raising teenage Sam. Parish and Scarlett form a friendship that soon turns into so much more. They are swoon worthy. They work through the loss by being there for each other. Each one being the others rock in time of need. Parish builds an amazing bond with Sam.
A beautiful portrayal of how families deal with loss. Low main character angst which is good since this book is so deep in other areas. Can't wait to read/listen to the rest of the Lyon Family series.
