Best For Last: An Enemies to Lovers Romance (The Symbols Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 357 ratings

Wall Street Journal bestselling author, Dylan Allen continues the Symbols Series with an enemies- to-lovers vacation romance.

After running from my past for 5 years,

I’m finally ready to face it.
I miss my family, my friends,
myself.

I take a trip to Ghana to relax and figure out how to get my life back.
It doesn’t get off to a great start.
But paradise keeps its promise and less than a week in, I’m more relaxed than I’ve been in years.

Until Harry, the ex-seat mate I hoped I'd never see again, shows up at my resort.
The grouchy Brit is more gorgeous than I remembered.
And the biggest jerk I've ever met.

I don’t know why my pulse races every time we lock eyes.
Or why I can’t stop thinking about him.
And why I let him kiss me…and then kissed him back.

The timing is terrible.
But I know lightning doesn’t strike twice.
And I’ve
never met a man like him.
Our affair starts on a moonlit beach and ignites a fire between us that will span continents.
Meeting again in the unlikeliest place feels written in the stars. But I'll need the courage of the gods to face him.

Review

"Dylan Allen is fearless in her writing, gutting you with the prologue giving you every bit of Lilly's story with a raw and flawless prose so you feel like you're right there with her: the pain, the shame and the joy of self-rediscovery. Harry goes down as one of my favorite book boyfriends ever" -
Bestselling Author Stephanie Rose

It was beautiful, poignant, painful, and so uplifting and happy. It was like Dylan distilled life and put it between the covers of a book. I can't recommend this book enough when it comes out, my friends-

RELEASE is the first book I've read by Dylan Allen. Lilly and Harry meet on a plane in first class. Their meeting is memorable but not the best of first impressions. When they next “bump” into each other it is in a hotel in West Africa. Again this “collision” was memorable and a lot more like a disaster. So, there is an instant attraction! Unbidden and unruly! They both dismissed it as a flight of fancy. If you believe in fate for whatever reason, coincidence, bad luck, they had met.

Their next meeting is being stuck in an elevator with nothing but time. Whether 'fate' or destiny plays a part they are stuck in an elevator and share a first kiss. They kiss like they might not ever be rescued. It is a kiss they share that will leave them never the same. Like they might die in the elevator and this might be the last kiss with anyone ever again. But they are rescued shortly after and fate or universe will bring them back together? She knew that trouble was coming and had arrived in the shape of a walking, talking, breathing definition of tall, dark, and handsome. They both have issues, and being able to trust problems.

The great advice given to Lilly by a very wise woman is; “I've lived a long enough life to know nothing is as bad as it seems. I also know that no secret stays a secret.” That she should tell her story, before someone else does, and she may not like their version. Pretending means there is a lack of trust, and if they have a second chance, by some miracle, they should hold on for all it is worth. If they had not met they wouldn't know the power of ever knowing the powerful connection that a person can only have with their soul mate. But Lilly is tempted to run when things seem hopeless. Light can't be seen without the dark.

I love the writing and advice:

“There's not a kinder soul in the world. No one's heart is as wide open and giving as yours. But until you decide to start being honest, you always will find freedom elusive.
The truth is your responsibility. Not just to yourself. But to the people who you love.”

“Wherever I am, wherever I go-if you’re there, it feels like home. Your heart is home.”

“If you stumble, I stumble with you and we catch each other.”

“We stand there, two hearts that refuse to be parted and two souls are each others reason for everything.”

“ I bask in the fairytale that is life. I had to fight for it, we never once let go of each other, This love is my truth. And it set me free.”

Dylan Allen’s books are always full of diversity, strong female relationships, vibrant locales and passionate romance, and Release, Ms. Allen’s latest book in her Symbols of Love series, is no exception.

Release is about Lilly, the middle Hassan sister from the series, who is hiding a lot of pain behind a strong facade. Harry, the hero, is hiding a lot of pain and disappointment behind a strong facade as well. These two have a bit of a rocky start, but the two have a strong connection which transcends continents. As a result of their sorrow and pain, they create a series of misunderstandings which reveal secrets that I wondered if they would be able to overcome. Lilly and Harry’s journey is a passionate and dramatic one, which kept me on my toes.

Each book in this series takes place in a different location and Ghana and England come to life in Release. Ms. Allen always does a wonderful job letting the reader experience the setting. It’s one of the favorite things I like about her books.

Additionally, I enjoy the relationship between the sisters, Addie, Milly and Lilly. These books are about how family can ground you, especially in times of need. Additionally, the secondary characters shine. I especially enjoy Jan, Harry’s housekeeper, and would love to read about her more! She has lots of spunk and is a special addition in the book.

This is the third book in Ms. Allen’s Symbol of Love series, but can be read as a standalone.

Wow. Release grabs your heart from the very first sentence and doesn't let go.This book is raw, honest, emotional, and uplifting. There are situations that will hurt your heart and rock you to your core, but there are others that will have you laughing out loud (so loud in fact, that you will wake your sleeping spouse!) and smiling like a lovesick fool. Release is book 3 in the Symbols of love series, but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend reading the previous books though because they are amazing and characters from those books do appear in this one.

Lilly and Harry were such complex characters. There was so much emotional baggage and demons of the past weighing them down. Their struggles were so internal that even their well intentioned families couldn't see them or their pain. Yes, Lilly and Harry don't quite have a fairy tale meet cute, but it's clear from the start that their connection is unparalleled. They challenge and argue with each other, each giving as good as they get. Though some of the exchanges are quite hurtful, they're also honest and real. I was equally in love with and annoyed by Lilly and Harry at different times in the book. What I appreciate most about Dylan Allen's books though, is that she allows her characters to be human. They make mistakes. They hurt. They overcome. They forgive. They love.

Lilly and Harry's story is not an easy one. There is plenty of family drama, twists, and revelations that have you on an emotional roller coaster. It's more than a love story between 2 characters. It's also a love story between parent and child, brothers and sisters, and most importantly, of yourself. I have loved each of these sister's stories so much and cannot recommend this series enough!

ps - I am still DYING from the scene in the car following Louis and Cara's wedding! Camille was seriously THE BEST comic relief ever!

I’m not sure what happened, but about halfway through this book it becomes riddled with errors - two words just randomly pasted into a sentence, periods in the middle of a sentence, combining plural and singular words. It’s bizarre and actually hard to read. I’m not sure how this got past even a basic proofreading.
However, if you can get past that, the author does a good job describing places and emotions and it’s certainly an angsty tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!

This story broke my heart.
I'd gone on a Dylan Allen binge and left this little series to last.
All the stories were emotional and angsty. I loved it.
But this story got me. I actually sobbed. Such a rollercoaster.
Update:
Right, I'm sure I've said before that I loved this series first time round. And I still stand by that. Somehow the very talented Dylan has improved and made this book and the series so much better!
I don't want to say that Dylan saved the best till last but this book absolutely broke me. All over again. The love I have for Lilly as a brave, strong and independent woman is off the scale. She is amazing despite her pain.
And Harry, the part grumpy Brit that says it how it is, the chemistry they have cannot be ignored and the way they keep coming back to eachother. I adore these two. My heart is with them all the way. The story spans oceans and years, but more importantly it makes them feel. More than that though, it allows Lilly to be loved and give love.
What a beautiful story full love and care, acceptance and growth. I can't rate this series highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of dark secrets.

This really did complete the Symbols of Love series. Lilly and Harry’s story is a turbulent one for sure Lilly has dark secrets that cripple her. Harry’s been burnt before and he’s very cynical. But when the meet the sparks fly....literally.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited, good storyline
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2022
The editing was very jarring, at multiple points there are full stops in the middle of sentences and sentences which just don’t make sense. And a major pet peeve of mine is using Americanisms for a story based in the UK: million-dollar business vs million-pound; RV vs caravan, which just jolt you out of the story. Having said that, it was an okay read, if a little drawn out in places. I think the first 2 in this series were much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story is a 4 but proof reading a 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2020
I’ve never read a book with so many spelling mistakes and totally incorrect grammar, words missing and words where there shouldn’t be... and I am no English major. The constant errors just got very frustrating as reading didn’t flow because words incorrect or missing. A shame because would have been a 4 otherwise. Needs much better proof reading before going live.
