4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,546 ratings

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charity Ferrell comes a page turning second chance romance.

We were the epitome of young love.
Small town sweethearts.
Until we broke.

He promised to hate me until he takes his last breath.
I don’t blame him. He pleaded for me to not walk away.
What he doesn’t know is that leaving him broke my heart as much as it did his.
But I had to do it.

Now, he’s back in town even though he swore he’d never return.
He carries new demons, more heartache, but no one knows why.
And as much as we pretend to hate each other, we can’t seem to push the other away completely.

Then I learn what he’s hiding.
And I’m not sure if he even carries a heart to give me again.

Emotional and Heartfelt
This is book three in the Blue Beech series and is Lauren and Gage's story.Lauren and Gage were high school sweethearts and had planned a future together, but Lauren mysteriously ended up breaking things off and refused to tell Gage why. They both went separate ways. Now ten years later, he is back in Blue Beech, Iowa to help his ailing father, as one of the local cops. This was so well written. I love second chance love stories. Factor in some suspense and mystery, I'm yours. I loved these characters. Ms. Ferrell does a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story. I seriously did not want to put this book down and by the end I was emotionally spent.Let's talk about the characters.Lauren was sweet and a little naive if not loyal. She was the good girl that sacrificed her happiness to only to lessen someone else's burden. I really liked her. Although there were a couple of Gage's actions that I would have liked to see her react a little differently (ie the part he explained about the other women) She was so compassionate and trusting even after being hurt so badly (which she blamed herself for).Gage was devastated after the breakup, rightfully so, but he tried to move on the best he could. He never got over the love of his life enough to fully move on though which caused a lot of issues that led to the tragedy that led him back home. I loved his character. Did I want to junk punch him on several occasions, yes, yes I did. But he was operating on the knowledge he had, not the full truth of what happened between them.Overall, I think this series is utterly fantastic and this book was quite possibly my favorite so far.

Just Exes by Charity Ferrell
Rated 5 stars!!

WOW! These characters...this story! I have No Words! I was thrilled, elated, full or sorrow, anger, and joy. These all came and went throughout the reading of this amazing book! I love reading Ms Ferrell’s stories because I become so involved in the lives of the characters. I worry and wonder how they will resolve this...or that. If they will be forgiven or apologize. Can they recover from certain situations.... This is a wonderful story that I loved reading.

Gage comes across a strong man and he is mentally as well as physically. But there is some vulnerability about him that i can’t get past. He brings out my “that poor guy” emotion. Is it the uniform...the expression...or his thoughts? He has a troubled past from the time Lauren left him til now. He has changed...became darker. He tells her one time “You don’t want me. I am destructive, dark and unhappy. You are smiles and sunshine. We don’t match anymore.” See??? There goes my heart out to him. When we find how deep his character goes.....I am blown away.

Lauren is a person who wants to make people feel better. If they are broken...fix them. That works perfectly for her job as a nurse in a busy ER. But on Gage? He doesn’t want to share his deepest darkest secrets with anyone but especially Lauren. They fall into a push and pull relationship and those never seem to end well. Will she be strong enough and fight for Gage? Or will her own demons pull her down?

Lauren’s parents specifically her Dad are great! They add humor and levity to the sometimes out of control life of Lauren. I love how they are so accepting of things. Her brothers (Dallas and Hudson) and girlfriends (Willow and Stella) are typical family. The boys tease and interrogate and the girls whisper and advise. But it’s all done with love.
Gage’s friends Kyle and Luke...there are no words!!! Damn that man has the two best friends! They are “Team Gage” all the way. Very impressive! They have some humor towards Lauren but it’s all back-handed so it’s not funny or is it? She does get warned about hurting him more than once. Gage is their numero uno priority. Just like best friends should be.

It was nice to see Hudson/Stella and Dallas/Willow again. They added so much to this story. They gave Lauren and even sometimes Gage their quiet strength and advice when needed.

This is the third story of the siblings. Each one has been different and a complete “knock that ball outta the park”. This one is no exception. It’s a great second chance at romance! It can definitely be read as a stand alone. My recommendation would be to read all three so you can understand where each one is coming from when giving advice and such.

A heartwrenching angsty, fast paced and breathless rollercoaster of a story. Lauren and Gage are meant for each other and it takes a lot for them to find their HEA. But what a swoony soulful ultimate redemption story.

This was one of the books I was most excited for in this series. Two exes who ended on bad turns, meet again when he arrested her. It was a recipe for a good dramatic story, and while it didn’t fail in that department it sadly wasn’t up to my expectations.

Maybe the issue was in my own expectation of the story, but I just found less to connect with in the characters compared to previous books. Yes, there were drama, struggles and hardships that I really loved, but among that there wasn’t that much in the main characters to make me drawn into their lives. To the story’s credit though, this was the first book in the series where I didn’t hate the main guy. Gage was throughout the story a kind and decent guy towards Lauren, even when she didn’t deserve it. Which brings me on to my next point.

For being so angry and claiming to hate Lauren that hate fizzled out real quickly which took away some of that drama as well as realism. For everything that happened and for how it ended it felt strange and kind of forced how accommodating and involved Gage was to Lauren. It went way too fast from “I hate you” to them trying to reconnect in my opinion and I feel like that was the main reason as to why I found difficulty connecting to the characters and in turn the romance. I did like both the characters and romance however, just not as much as I was expecting.

Something that went beyond my expectations were the twists in the book with what happened in Chicago and the reason why Lauren broke up with him. I loved how it kept me on my toes and anticipating more revelations and information and it built up excellently to the climax and when all secrets were revealed. My only wish was that the ending wasn’t so rushed and cramped. The whole Chicago history and everything involving that was amazingly well handled, but the reason why Lauren left him and the whole landlord situation felt so quickly moved past and just thrown in there for a quick HEA. The landlord conflict could as well have been left out of the story in my opinion since it didn’t really add that much and that would also have given more space for a more in-depth resolution to Lauren’s secret.

Overall, it was a good book. I just wished for a deeper dive into the characters and even perhaps some apology or acknowledgement of wrongdoing on Kyle’s part for the way he treated Lauren. That’s kind of a minor issue though so as a whole the book lands on three and a half stars.

Gage and Lauren have an amazing second chance story, where hate and love are close neighbours.
I loved seeing the development of.prior characters, too.

So this is the third book of a very addicting series. Just like the two before this one it’s freaking good. Lauren is a nurse who finds herself homeless after her apartment building burns down. She’s then accused of arson and finds out the love of her life, Gage,is back in town. He is still angry and heartbroken while he arrests her. Gage is back to Blue Beech after transferring from Chicago where he suffered a lot of pain and is returning a different man. Lauren and Gage’s journey is bumpy but full of love neither one lost or is willing to let go. Just like Dallas and Willow’s story this one has loss and grief but the story of loss is so much more worse. It may be an issue with anyone who has triggers with child loss. It’s such a good story to read. Just like the others it was read in hours. It’s hard to put down. Now to the next one.

It was fine. Not bad not great. I was expecting more to the reasoning behind the breakup. That was fairly anticlimactic. In fact it was really pretty stupid. The whole thing about Missy/Andy was stupid to keep a "secret" too. Because it is his "dark side"? Really stupid reasoning for every secret. I read Kyle's story first, unknowingly that his came after this one, and thought reading this one would be great. Was bummed that it didn't really have a good feel. I think the whole thing in Chicago was done well and it added more depth to the story, but keeping it a secret just made it dumb.

“I want to punch him in the face.
I want to apologize.
I want him to know I regret what I did and that my heart beats only for him.
But it wouldn’t change anything.
No amount of apologizing will reverse the betrayal and pain I caused.”

Just Exes is a fantastic second chance romance by Charity Ferrell. I fell in love with Ms. Ferrell’s writing when I read ‘Just One Night’ (Book #1) and ‘Just Her Body Guard’(Book #2), and have since read many of her other works too- so when I saw this book there was no question, I knew I just had to read it. I am excited to say that it was everything I had hoped for or expected from this talented author- I thought it was going to be impossible for her to get me to love any characters more than I did Stella and Hudson (Just Her Body Guard)… but Lauren and Gage have certainly succeeded. This is now my favourite book of Ms. Ferrell’s, so far.
This is a beautiful and such an emotional story- extremely well written. It had me totally engrossed right from the start. I found it a sexy, slow-burning, funny, emotive and very relatable!
The characters are all so well developed and endearing. I found it easy to connect with them and their story. I was cheering them on from the sidelines the whole way through. They had both been through so much and had carried their pain for so long, my heart ached for them! But boy, these two were entertaining with their arguing, verbal jousting, and one-upmanship- their banter was hilarious at times, which did help to balance the emotional and heartbreaking moments.
The story has a great pace and a smooth flow. It was so easy read, I got through it all in one sitting.
I am very excited to see what comes next!

Thank you, Ms. Ferrell!

I was excited to finally read Lauren’s book! I enjoyed her spunky personality a lot in the previous novels of the Blue Beech Series and was intrigued about her relationship with her ex, Gage. I so wasn’t expecting that kind of story that was really deep and bursting with feels. I enjoyed the tension and sizzling chemistry oozing from these two right from the start. Their unresolved feelings were clearly apparent after years apart, and made their reunion so explosive. Just Exes had me hooked from start to finish! Between rivalry, passion and falling in love all over again, this was such an exquisite second chance romance!
