I Could Never Kindle Edition

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new forbidden, enemies-to-lovers story…
It all started with an unexpected phone call.
Two years after my fiancé passed away in an accident, his father died suddenly, leaving Brad’s adult, special-needs brother with no one to care for him.
The next thing I knew, I was on a cross-country drive to New Hampshire where I’d be moving in to look after Scottie until I could get him into a group home.
The last thing I ever expected?
I wouldn’t be taking care of him alone.
Josh Mathers, my fiancé’s best friend—who also happened to be my sworn enemy—insisted he was the better person for the job. He told me to go back to California, and I told him where he could stick that demand.
Our disdain for each other wasn’t anything new. It dated back to a text I’d accidentally read years ago.
We hated each other. But we both loved Scottie, so neither of us budged.
Now we were living together in a tiny house—with one available bedroom. Thank goodness it was only temporary.
Over time, I realized the broody jerk I thought I knew was different than I’d imagined.
I found myself slowly growing attached to someone I once considered the enemy…and growing attracted to him.
Sure, both of us were guilt-ridden over Brad. We were also two grown people with pent-up frustration toward one another—stuck in a cabin in the woods.
But this was
Josh.
I could never.

I've cried a few times while reading this book. I laughed out loud and physically felt my heart shattered at one point. It was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. I instantly loved these characters. The way their relationship came about was genuine, even if it was difficult to process. Losing someone who they both loved wasn't easy. Putting their lives on hold to care for Scottie was selfless and heartwarming.Falling for each other was an unexpected path, but it was meant to be. The day their lives fell apart led them on a journey of self-discovery and the kind of love they didn’t think was possible. I loved the slow burn, the intense sexual tension, the way they held themselves back. I also loved the vulnerability and the trust they shared.Scottie melted my heart. At one point, I had tears falling down my face, full of anxiety and hoping for the best. Scottie was what Carly and Josh needed and vice versa. Because family isn't just blood; it's who you love and who loves you back. The people you can't imagine your life without. Great story! 🙂

It’s been a hot minute since a book made me cry. This book was powerful in so many ways.

Carly’s world was torn apart 2 years ago when she lost her fiancée. Now, her fiancée’s special needs brother needed someone to care for him. She didn’t hesitate. She felt that this is what Bras would want her to do.

Josh didn’t have the best reputation. He was known for playing the field but when his best friend was taken away from him, his works changed. His brother needed someone and he was the man for the job.

Carly and Josh didn’t like each other..at all. So when they both show up for Scottie, they had to put their differences aside and do what was best for Scottie. Things begin to melt between the 2 of them but neither wanted to act on anything because of their love and devotion to Brad. But fate had its way of working it out. To watch Carly and Josh wrestle with their feelings toward one another was so heartbreaking. To read what they were thinking and how they were trying to handle it was just a testament to how they both loved Brad. And when an emergency happens and brings them back together, they both pray for a sign from Brad and God.

I loved Scottie. He might have been non verbal, but he had his ways of showing his love. He kept me laughing with him and Josh and then I cried so hard when they placed him in a group home. There were other special moments with Scottie and how he recognized things and people he loved. The ending was the icing on the cake.

Josh got his sign when he happened upon a church and I cried for all the words of wisdom Josh was given. It makes you stop and realize that life is precious.

This book was so well written. You felt for these people in this book and what they were going through. It was funny, sad, hot, heartbreaking and happy all in one story. This one will stick with me.

This was my first Penelope Ward book and I wasn't blown away. There were definitely some emotional scenes that made me tear up, but the slow-burn was exhausting. I loved the sexual tension between Carly and Josh, I just couldn't get behind their reasoning 100%.

I'm sure some people would totally understand the forbidden nature of their relationship, but not me. Tragedy brings people together, and I've seen this type of thing happen in the real world. Unfortunately, this made the story drag for me.

I did love the premise though. Coming together to care for an autistic adult is no small feat, and I loved how gentle, caring, and understanding they were with Scottie.

I Could Never is a fantastic story but needed some other issue to keep them apart.

I Could Never by Penelope Ward is an exceptional contemporary romance novel that masterfully weaves a complicated enemies-to-lovers romance into a heartwarming and captivating love story. With a seamless blend of emotion, chemistry and character development, Ward delivered a story that me drew me in from the start. Ward's writing is beautifully evocative, painting vivid scenes that transport me into the characters' world. The pacing is perfectly balanced and allowed the relationship to develop in a natural and believable way. She incorporated moments of humor and vulnerability with all that emotion, which added layers of authenticity to the characters' growth and transformation.

Set against a backdrop of shared connections, Penelope Ward introduced readers to new characters who are worlds apart, each harboring their own secrets and motivations. The palpable tension between Josh and Carly created a crackling atmosphere that was electric from the very beginning, and their witty banter and genuine animosity made for a relationship that gradually evolved into something deeper and more meaningful.

With skillful storytelling, well-developed characters and the perfect blend of tension and tenderness, Penelope Ward’s I Could Never was an exceptionally executed and engaging enemies-to-lovers romance. Sizzling chemistry, an addictive storyline, and the slow-burn build-up of the romance made this a page-turning pleasure-to-read. But the emotional depth and authenticity of the characters' struggles is what truly made their eventual romance all the more rewarding and satisfying. Five smooches from me for I Could Never by Penelope Ward!

You know those books that are a direct hit to the heart? Those that make you laugh while you cry and fill you so full of feelings that it will live in your heart for all eternity? Yep, that’s this book. I wish I could read it again for the first time, and Carly, Josh, and Scottie will always be a part of me.

No, it's not what you think. This isn’t a live triangle or anything like that. Two years after Carly Garber's fiancé Brad is killed in a traffic accident, his father dies, leaving Scottie, Brad's adult autistic brother, without a guardian. Carly knows Brad would want her to take care of Scottie, so she leaves California and heads to Woodsboro, NH. She doesn’t have any experience in this situation, but Brad’s best friend, Josh Mathers shows up to help. The only problem? Carly and Josh don’t like each other.

Oh my heart y'all, this one is so freaking amazing I don’t have the words. There's plenty of angst with enemies to lovers and the guilt over the whole best friend's fiancée’s thing, but it's also unbearably sweet and achingly tender. Although Scottie never says a word, he steals every scene, provides tons of comedic relief, and makes me want to wrap him in my arms. Charming, funny, steamy, and full of heart, this is an unputdownable, unique, extraordinary romance that you absolutely won’t want to miss!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly moving story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2023
Where do you begin to even comment about total perfection. This storyline has it all, and the central character although doesn’t utter a word is totally mesmerising. The author obviously has first hand experience and has done a terrific amount of necessary research to pen such a sympathetic and compelling book. Scottie is a mature adult with severe autism. He cannot communicate through speeech, and his solitary world is rocked when his father dies. Unfyhis only living legal relative is his aunt, who quite rightfully and without judgement finds it difficult to cope. Scottie has the mind and behaviour of a child, and has temper tantrums etc when things go wrong. 200 lbs of male is quite difficult to cope with and up steps Carly, Scottie’s late brother fiancée and Jag, Ben’s very good friend. The two take on the responsibilities of looking after a very special needs guy, and the story unfolds. It is extremely well written, edited, and flows so smoothly, for such a deep and difficult topic. It is neither uncomfortable to read and is peppered with good humour, and life experiences. The realtionship amongst all three is endearing and heart warming. As Josh and Carly begin to realise they don’t despise each other but the opposite , the reader becomes immersed in romantic involvements and denial. There is a wonderful HEA, but some terrific hurdles and sad moments to encounter first. This author never fails to engage the reader and her penmanship is phenomenal. This book is really engaging and totally awesome. A work of art.
